Things you'll need:

• card (store bought or handmade)

• quality writing utensil

1. Write a salutation. This depends on how you know the recipient of your card. For close family or friends, "Dear" and their first name may be appropriate. For personal or business acquaintances, a more formal greeting of "Dear Ms." and their last name is recommended. For example, "Dear Elizabeth,"

2. Thank them for the specific gift or favor. Be specific, which shows you appreciated their specific gift or action. For example, "Thank you for the lovely handmade baby blanket."

 3. Tell them how you will use the gift, or how the favor they did was helpful to you. For example, "Craig and I can't wait to wrap that baby up in it! It looks great in the baby's room."

4. Tell them how much you appreciate their efforts in the gift or favor. For example, "We are honored that you went to all the trouble to make this blanket for us. You are so talented!"

5. Finish by thanking them again, and mention that you are looking forward to the next time you will see them. For example, "Thank you again for thinking of us. Can't wait to see you next time you are in town!"

6. Sign your name with an appropriate closing statement. Close friend or family member? "Love," will do. Business associate? Maybe "Sincerely," or "Best Wishes,". For example, "Love, Gretchen"

Tips & Warnings

• Try to send your thank you within a week of receiving the gift or favor

• Colored pens can add a fun touch to your card, but make sure you have chosen a legible color
